How strong should the magnet be on a precision screwdriver?

S2 steel vs CR-V — which is better for precision screwdriver bits?
Both are excellent — the real quality divider is named steel vs mystery steel. In our 500-cycle wear test, S2 bits showed 9-12μm of wear, CR-V bits showed 20μm, and unlabeled generic steel bits showed 94μm (nearly double the failure threshold). As long as the manufacturer specifies S2 or CR-V, the bits will likely outlast your needs. If the listing says "high-quality steel" without naming the grade, avoid it.

How many bits do I actually need in a precision screwdriver set?

What's the difference between a bearing rotation cap and a toothed ratchet?
A bearing rotation cap uses ball bearings in the handle top, letting it spin with virtually zero resistance (0.08 N·cm backdrag in our testing). A toothed ratchet uses a gear mechanism with distinct clicks (typically 0.3-1.2 N·cm backdrag). For precision work — small screws, repetitive turns — the bearing cap is measurably superior. For applications requiring high torque in tight spaces, a toothed ratchet's positive engagement is preferable.

When should I replace my precision screwdriver bits?
Based on our wear testing: S2 steel bits last 3-5+ years with regular use, CR-V bits last 2-5 years, and unlabeled generic bits last 6-12 months with weekly use. The early warning sign is increased cam-out — if your bit starts slipping out of screw heads more often, the tip is wearing. Replace it before it strips a screw you can't replace.
